Realise the fact that whenever you operate your Laptop, you have in your lap piece of marvel in terms of technology. If we were to detail the actual engineering in just a Solid State Drive memory chip to store data you’d be surprised. In fact, computer and smartphone’s entire working process is based on quantum physics. No doubt the computer is one of the wonders of human ingenuity that has changed the way we live, communicate and work as humans.
But with all the wonders found within a laptop device, and since it contains many moving parts, often times it requires you to take it to a professional laptop repairer for a service. But before you do, here are some tips and insights provided by The Electronic Fix in Brisbane Australia.
Unresponsive Keyboard or Keys
Yep. When a key on a computer keyboard stops working, and if you’ve behaved like a click monkey, you are not alone trying repeatedly pressing the key on a keyboard hoping that it will magically start working again. You might have experienced that annoying moment when a particular key or the whole keyboard becomes unresponsive. Is it not surprising that keys on a keyboards becomes unresponsive at worst time possible (usually during writing that important assignment or business proposal).
Fixing key or keyboard issues could be a simple fix by just cleaning the key slot and ensuring the rubber is functioning for that bounce back or updating the laptop keyboard driver. For wireless keyboards, you may want to double check the battery has charge, or the wi-fi receiver driver is operational. Or you may need to take in your device for repairs or keyboard replacement.
Tip: when number pad keys aren’t working. Check to make sure NumLock is not active as that can also result in unresponsiveness number keys on keyboard.
Liquid Spill Damaged the Laptop
Hey, it happens. And when it does, safety comes first. Make sure to unplug any/all power connection or cables attached to the laptop. Do NOT use a hair dryer.
Then, get a dry soft cloth (liquid absorbent dry wipes will work too) and gently clean any liquid (including ports). Once you have taken off excess liquid from the outside, flip the laptop upside-down and place it on a dry towel to let the liquid spill drain out. Open the back panel and repeat the process but do so gently. Do NOT power back on the laptop until all the spilt liquid is removed to avoid further damage.

Failing Hard Drive
The shelf life of most laptops sold in Australia are up to 4 to 5 years, once your laptop has crossed this mark, it’s common for a laptop to experience many issues such as boot process taking too long, frozen screen, slow running or frozen programs, device taking a longer than usual time to work with, or even hearing unfamiliar noises coming from within the device (especially if using HDD instead of SSD).
Best way to fix failing hard drive is by replacing it.
- First, make sure to backup all of your data onto a spare hard disk drive (external hard drives works best for this).
- Turn off the power and remove any power cables and also laptop battery. Using a screwdriver that fits the size of screws on the laptop back-panel, remove all screws and locate the HDD socket. Remove the cable and then the HDD. Insert the new one and reattach the cable. Finally, assemble back-panel to its original state.
- Once you’ve installed the laptop Hard Disk Drive, you are ready to transfer all the files from backup drive to your new HDD (this process may take a while to complete) so thus be patient.
Laptop Switches On/Off Suddenly
Once again, this could be an easy fix. First thing to do when troubleshooting such issues is always check power cables and battery. Upon which you can run many tests as the problem could be related to the memory modules (which are your RAM sticks) or in worst case scenario motherboard failure.
If the issue is with memory modules, one can try reseating the modules on the slot. Try placing the modules one by one and testing them to eliminate the cause of the problem being RAM. If its a simple case of disengaged memory module then this simple reseating will fix laptop switching on and off automatically. However, if the issue isn’t resolved following these techniques, then it could be an indication that motherboard is having problems which will need professional assistance to remedy.
Wi-Fi Issues
Have you ever tried to access the Internet but your PC just won’t connect? It could be a simple incorrect router or Wi-Fi settings, or it could be the Network Adapter Wi-Fi Card needing a repair or replacement. Due to wear and tear Wireless (Wi-Fi) Network Card in laptops may need to be replaced at some point during laptop’s life.
Sound Not Working
Its just annoying to use a laptop with no sound. Or more annoying when left or right speaker doesn’t work. Once again, fixing sound issues could be as simple as adjusting sound settings or updating the Sound Card Driver. Or, the internals of the notebook may need analysis to identify why the sound is not working.
Most modern notebooks tablets and laptops have the sound card (audio card) chip soldered to the motherboard. You can purchase USB Sound Adapters which will allow you to have sound, or get professional laptop repairers to remedy the problem. The Electronic Fix qualified laptop repair specialists in Brisbane Queensland Australia have the knowledge and tools to work on the circuitry level or laptop components, that means, we can fix most laptop motherboard related problems saving you hundreds of dollars compared to part replacement.
Display Screen Showing Unusual Colours
If your laptop display is beginning to show unusual colours, or random coloured lines across the screen, first question to ask yourself "is it a laptop screen problem" or "is it a graphics card failure". Here’s what you can do to troubleshoot laptop screen issues.
- Test using an external monitor. Simply hook up your laptop to another monitor. If both the internal and external monitors show distorted colours, then, this is a classic case of graphics card failure and requires laptop repair technicians to either fix or replace the laptop’s Graphic Card (in 2022 especially due to Graphic Card shortage, remember, The Electronic Fix can solve your graphics card issues (depending on the problem) saving you hundreds of dollars compared to buying a new one).
- If the external monitor displays normal colours, then the issue could be with the internal components and connections related to the laptop screen. For example: faulty connection between the screen and the motherboard, faulty LCD cable or burnt screen. In such cases, you’ll need to open the pack panel and identify the cause, check connector cables and if all look okay internally, then, it may be time to replace your laptop screen. Although you could attempt to fix it yourself, it’s a complicated process for DIYs so thus contact your local laptop repairers in your area.
