Usually its the Aussie parents surprises the young ones by purchasing (often expensive) gaming consoles. Especially when there’s the ever looming lockdowns here in Brisbane we as parents feel the need to keep the children entertained indoors. Online gaming is a huge industry around the world, particularly in Australia. Perhaps because we live down-under compared to other countries, or perhaps they are down-under depending on the perspective one has.
In all cases, just like any other digital device, gaming consoles often face problems that need fixing. And the last thing we want to see is our kids (usually teenagers) with puppy eyes looking at us after a gaming console stops working due to a problem. Whether it is the Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch or 3DS console, some common problems do often occur in gaming consoles, and, that’s the last thing a Gamer wants to hear.

Factory Reset Your Gaming Console
Sometimes, the simplest actions are the most practical ones, that means, backup any games you have installed and then reset your game console. If the problem is such that the console doens’t shut down at all, then, your only option is to try turning the power off or cutting the power supply from behind the device. Let it sit for a few minutes and try powering it on again so that you can reset to factory default settings.
How to Reset Xbox Game Console
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info.
- Select Reset console.
- On the Reset your console? screen, you’ll see three options:
- Reset and remove everything. This option resets the console to factory settings. All user data, including accounts, saved games, settings, home Xbox associations, and all games and apps will be deleted. Use this option when selling or gifting the console, or as a last resort in some troubleshooting cases.
- Reset and keep my games & apps. Use this option as your primary choice when troubleshooting. It resets the OS and deletes all potentially corrupted data without deleting your games or apps. In some cases, if a corrupt game file is causing the issue you’re troubleshooting, you may have to choose Reset and remove everything, but you should always start with Reset and keep my games & apps.
- Cancel. To back out of this screen, simply select the Cancel button. No action has been taken at this point. This is a safe exit from this screen.

Overheating Can Cause Issues With Gaming Consoles
Did you know that almost all electronic devices are prone to heat and temperature problems? Meaning, just like all electronic devices, gaming consoles do heat up which can cause problems.
Particularly, when it comes to gaming, we understand that once you get in to the zone (or in the middle of online tournament with your friends for example) one can spend hours and hours playing and that makes the gaming console (Xbox or PlayStation) get extremely hot. This can result in malfunctioning. If there is some sort of glitch and you see that the console is hot, then, simply turn off the console completely, and let it cool down at room temperature.
The Electronic Fix Pro Tip: The best way to avoid any sort of overheating is to place the actual console in an area with good air circulation. For example: don’t place the console near your desktop computer, or inside a cabinet, ideally, aim for the air to flow easily through the device, and make sure there are no obstruction which can limit air flow.
Check The Cables Attached to Your Console
As soon as there is any type of audio or visual problem with the console, people start switching off the console and restart to make it work. But the fact is, there could be many reasons for audio or visual issues, and one very important and often overlooked issue is the cables attached to the device. Often times, fixing visual and or audio issues of the console can be as simple as checking or changing the cables.
Simply investigate the cables, and ensure they are properly connected to the sockets. Check cables to ensure that they are disconnected, switched off or broken. Inspect the HDMI cable as that often comes loose quickly if the console is moved around.
Game Console Maintenance
Above all else, not many game console owners take the time to conduct regular maintenance (such as: cleaning, dusting, checking or replacing cables) until problems arise. We’d prefer you conduct regular inspection and at minimum dust the console on regular basis. Check the battery inside controllers (as they can sometimes leak due to heat from high temperature) and remove them when not gaming.
