Unless your laptop or notebook is regularly cleaned, it’s likely a breeding ground for nasty bacteria as well as dust and grime which may cause problems with your laptop.
Laptops are essential tools for both work and leisure, almost all of us own and use a laptop on daily basis. Keeping your laptop clean can not only improve its performance but also extend its lifespan. Here’s a comprehensive guide by The Electronic Fix on how to clean your laptop safely and effectively.
What You Will Need
- Soft microfibre cloth (Chux Original Superwipes will do)
- Antibacterial Disinfectant Cleaning Wipes (e.g. Dettol, Kleenex)
- Cotton buds (you can use this for keyboard, or cleaning ports)
- Compressed air can (you can skip this option if you do not have one at home)
- Small brush (e.g., a soft-bristled toothbrush)
Step-by-Step Guide for Cleaning Your Laptop
1. SAFETY FIRST Power Down Your Laptop
Before you start cleaning, ensure your laptop is turned off and unplugged from any power source. This is crucial for your safety and to prevent any damage to the laptop. Especially since you will be wiping it down with wipes.
2. Clean the Exterior
Start with the outside of your laptop. Use a soft cloth to gently wipe down the case and remove any access dust or fingerprints.
Next, slowly and gently wipe down the entire laptop from top-to-bottom using cleaning wipes. IMPORTANT make sure to squeeze the wipes of ANY excess water. Ideally you want a damp (but not watery) disinfectant wipes to gently wipe the casing. If there are stubborn stains, repeat this step couple of times.
3. Clean the Keyboard
Keyboards can harbour a lot of dirt and bacteria. Use the compressed air can to blow out any debris from between the keys. If you do not have compressed air handy, you can slowly and gently wipe down the entire laptop keyboard surface and in between keyboard crevices. IMPORTANT make sure to squeeze the wipes of ANY excess water. Ideally you want a damp (but not watery) disinfectant wipes to gently clean the keyboard.
You can use various items such as cotton buds, or by using an old toothbrush, you can gentle clean or brush spaces between the keys. Simply get in there and remove access dust, dirt or grime.
4. Clean the Screen
The screen is a delicate part of your laptop, so it requires careful cleaning. Use a dry microfibre cloth to gently wipe the screen in a circular motion. If there are smudges or fingerprints, lightly dampen the cloth with water. Avoid using cleaning solutions directly on the laptop screen as they can damage the coating.
Ideally, this is a 3 step process. Step One: gently wipe down with soft cloth. Step Two: gently wipe down with damp cloth. Step Three: final wipe to thoroughly dry and clean.
5. Clean the Ports and Vents
Dust can accumulate in the ports and vents of your laptop, causing it to overheat. If you do have one, use the compressed air can to blow out any dust from these areas. You can also use a small brush, cotton buds, or even soft toothbrush to gently remove any remaining debris.
Additional Tips for Laptop Maintenance
- Avoid eating or drinking near your laptop to prevent spills and crumbs.
- Regularly clean your laptop to maintain its appearance and performance.
- If your laptop is particularly dirty or you are unsure about cleaning it yourself, consider taking it to a professional.
Bonus Tip
Cut in shape a Chux Superwipes (almost all Australian homes have this, right?) and place it on the keyboard whenever you close the lid (this will provide additional layer of protection for your laptop screen and keyboard especially when on the move)
Make This a Habit
Cleaning your laptop regularly is a simple yet effective way to keep it running smoothly and looking great. Just as you would brush your teeth to avoid long term issues, by following these steps, you can ensure your laptop remains in tip top condition for years to come. Remember to handle your laptop with care and always power it down before cleaning.
